Preparing for your tax appointment:
In addition to the usual documents, be prepared for your tax appointment by bringing the following documents, if applicable, to your appointment:

• Escrow statement on the closing of a house purchase, refinance or deferred exchange.
• Cost basis of the stock or mutual fund that you sold (this can be difficult with older mutual funds that have been owned a long time.
• Charitable donations now need receipts to be deductible, you don't need to bring them in, but make sure you have them.
• Your complete brokerage 1099, there is often much in the detail on the other 100 or so pages you get behind the 1099 summary that is not reported on the 1099 but has tax significance like foreign tax credits, prepaid interest on bonds, investment fees, margin interest and other info.

Did you know:
Income tax rates for individuals were as high as 91% from the mid 1940s to the early 1960s.
